Hippocrates, a Greek born in 460 B.C. is considered to be the “father” of medicine. Hippocrates rejected superstition in favor of scientific observation, by classifying diseases, and created a set of moral and professional standards for physicians. The Hippocratic Oath

Doctors, not yet an elite professional group, were usually trained through a combination of schooling and apprenticeship. A large number of medical schools were business institutions organized for the profit of local practitioners.

The Thomsonians incorporated local folk customs into their therapeutics. In cities, practitioners started to compete with each other.

Through various medical discoveries, and technological advancements, cures, and preventative methods, were developed to help decrease the amount of people dying.

8 THE PRESENT I Tuesday, November 27, 2018Tuesday, November 27, 2018 Today, the focus of medicine has shifted from prevention of contagious diseases to cancer, drug abuse, heart disease and acquired immune deficiency syndrome which in part are caused by the lifestyles of patients.

Health care accounts for more than 14.3% of the gross national product. The maldistribution of physicians. Areas where the poor are found have access to fewer physicians. 11 THE FUTURE I Tuesday, November 27, 2018Tuesday, November 27, 2018 Most individuals, if not all, use the health care system during his/her lifetime. The hope is that the focus of healthcare will be on wellness and prevention rather than seeking a cure.

12 THE FUTURE II Tuesday, November 27, 2018Tuesday, November 27, 2018 With more Americans having a longer lifespan, there will be a need to service the elderly . With medicine being a business driven industry, small hospitals may be destined to become a thing of the past and the poor may continue to suffer because of the lack of access to healthcare.
