What is a Salt Marsh

Salt marshes are coastal wetlands that are flooded and drained by salt water brought in by the tides. They are marshy because the soil may be composed of deep mud and peat. Peat is made of decomposing plant matter often several feet thick.

Salt Water Algae This is a chlorophyll-containing, aquatic organism that does not have roots, stems, or leaves.

Salt Water Marsh Plants
Some aquatic plants in the marsh include duckweeds, lilly pads, and cattails. Grasses dominate most salt marshes.

Small Crustacean Could include familiar animals such as crabs, crayfish, shrimp, krill, and barnacles.

Sparrow Species of bird. Small, plump, brown-grey birds with short tails and powerful beaks.

Sandpiper Have long bodies and legs, narrow wings, and a narrow bill. The bills allow the birds to feel the mud and sand as they probe for food

Heron Long-legged freshwater and coastal bird.
