Slavery: no Freedom, no Rights
slave-a person held as the property of another person slavery-the practice of owning human beings necessary evil-something we need even though we don’t like it abolitionists-people who wanted slavery ended permanently(abolished) Nat Turner-led a slave rebellion that murdered slave owners Dred Scott-tried to gain his freedom by suing the government because he had lived in free states where slavery was illegal.

Slave States, Free States
Missouri Compromise-this compromise allowed Missouri to be admitted to the United States as a slave state and Maine to be admitted as a free state to maintain the balance of power between the North and South. Missouri Compromise-this compromise allowed California to be admitted to the United States as a free state, but the new territories of Utah and New Mexico would decide for themselves whether to allow slavery or not. Fugitive Slave Act-penalized citizens for helping runaway slaves and required them to cooperate with the process of returning slaves to their owners.

Civil War and Reconstruction
secession-means separation or breaking away Emancipation Proclamation-the declaration issued by President Lincoln that all slaves in the South were free. 13th Amendment-outlawed slaves in the United States reconstruction-the period of rebuilding after the Civil War 14th Amendment-guaranteed citizenship to all people born in the U.S. It also gave all citizens the right to due process and equal protection under the law. 15th Amendment-gave all men the right to vote regardless of their race or whether they had been slaves before the war.

Jim Crow undermine-someone trying to weaken your efforts to do something Black Codes-laws that created a legal form of segregation that limited the rights and freedoms of black people. Segregation-separation of races Jim Crow- when a white actor would cover his face with charcoal and then sing and dance in a silly uncomplimentary way. People began to use this term as a way to describe black people.

heritage-if a person were trying to prove he/she was not black they would have to go back at least three generations to make sure there was no African heritage. miscegenation-means mixing of races. interracial-more than one race. public accommodation-a place where people spend time. EX: pools, theaters, libraries Voting Rights Act of 1965-this act banned racial discrimination in state and federal elections. Plessy vs Ferguson-established that is was legal to create “separate but equal” public settings.
