Read the definitions on the next two slides CAREFULLY!
2
DEFINITIONS ELEMENT – a pure substance consisting of only one type of atom; example – chromium (Cr) MOLECULE – the combination of two or more atoms (the same or different); example – iron oxide (Fe2O3) AND oxygen (O2)
3
DEFINITIONS COMPOUND – a substance containing two or more elements that are combined chemically; example – silicon dioxide (SiO2) MIXTURE – a substance containing two or more elements that have not been combined chemically; example – salt water
4
FIND the ELEMENTS water (H20) tungsten (W) sulfur (S)
table salt (NaCl) Hint: An element has its own box on the periodic table - a pure substance with one type of atom ONLY
5
FIND the MOLECULES nitrogen (N2) potassium (K) ammonia (NH3)
thorium (Th) Hints: Two or more atoms combine chemically (same or different elements)
6
FIND the COMPOUNDS carbon monoxide (CO) cobalt (Co) glucose (C6H12O6)
chlorine (Cl2) Hint: Two or more elements (different types of atoms) are combined chemically
7
Choose all that apply… table salt (NaCl) is a(n) __.

You leave a glass of Kool-aid out and come back a few days later. The water evaporated and left the sugar and powder mix behind. Your glass of Kool-aid is an example of what? element compound mixture
