1 What’s a good paper? What do you notice?

2 The guidelines… Write on every other line.
Write only on the front side of the page. Directly address the prompt. Organize your thoughts into focused paragraphs. Compose your thoughts in grammatically complete sentences. Put your best work on the page. Use the blank page to plan your writing. When you have finished, turn in your paper with the pages in order and with your name on the first page.

3 Three for sure to notice…
Write on every other line.

4 One of the three… Directly address the prompt.
Three topics: (Always choose just one.) Does income always indicate success? Explain. Which is more important, what you have or who you are? Explain. What are the most important things you did yesterday, and how was each so important exactly? What is most important before you begin to write?

5 What’s the purpose of the writing?
Consider another guideline: Put your best work on the page. The purpose of the writing is for you to show what you can do. Now what is most important before you begin to write?

6 What should you do first?
Consider the topics closely: Does income always indicate success? Explain. Which is more important, what you have or who you are? Explain. What are the most important things you did yesterday, and how was each so important exactly? What do you notice now?

7 The first of the guidelines again…
Directly address the prompt. Three topics: Does income always indicate success? Explain. Which is more important, what you have or who you are? Explain. What are the most important things you did yesterday, and how was each so important exactly? How might you get started?

8 The second of the guidelines…
Organize your thoughts into focused paragraphs. Remember: Paragraphs are thought units, so they show the reader the organization of your thought. Each paragraph should begin and end clearly so that the reader easily sees the organization of your thought. Good organization enhances the message.

9 What is good organization exactly?
Good organization begins with the first paragraph. Based on the opening paragraph… Does the reader have a clear sense of what your position is? Can the reader accurately predict how many paragraphs are in the paper? Where does good organization of your paper begin?

10 One example: Be Cool to the Pizza Dude
Opening paragraph: If I have one operating philosophy about life it is this: “Be cool to the pizza delivery dude; it’s good luck.” Four principles guide the pizza dude philosophy. Based on this opening, how many paragraphs should the reader expect to find?

11 Pizza: Opening sentences (paragraphs)
(2): Principle 1: Coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in humility and forgiveness. (3): Principle 2: Coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in empathy. (4): Principle 3: Coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in honor and it reminds me to honor honest work. (5): Principle 4: Coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in equality.

12 Pizza: How is the organization?
(¶1) If I have one operating philosophy about life it is this: “Be cool to the pizza delivery dude; it’s good luck.” Four principles guide the pizza dude philosophy. (¶2): Principle 1: Coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in humility and forgiveness. (¶3): Principle 2: Coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in empathy. (¶4): Principle 3: Coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in honor and it reminds me to honor honest work. (¶5): Principle 4: Coolness to the pizza delivery dude is a practice in equality.

13 Opening paragraph #1 What is the true meaning of success? Success is when you achieve your goals and have prosperity in your life. On the other hand, income is what you receive for your labor. The amount of income you receive doesn’t always defined you as a successful person if you don’t have the respect of the people. What do you notice about this opening paragraph?

14 Opening paragraph #2 In our society we tend to acknowledge what people have and go from there and make an assumption that they’re successful. But does that give any reference of who they are? What do you notice about this opening paragraph?

15 Opening paragraph #3 I think ultimately success indicates income because money makes the word go round. Automatically when I hear the word success I think of the rich and famous. The only thing they have in common is great income. What do you notice about this opening paragraph?

16 Opening paragraph #4 Success is a very versatile word. Meaning that it has a different meaning for different people. Success to one person could mean providing to their family or being able to pay their bills with no help. To another person it could mean holding a lot of power and having a lot of money. A persons income does not indicate success because different people have different goals that make them successful. What do you notice about this opening paragraph?

17 Opening paragraph #5 Income seems to be the number one priority in everyones mind. Money provides clothes, food, shelter, and pleasure. The higher income one has, the nicer their belongings are. Even though one might have enough money to provide for their basic needs, they always want more. The higher one’s income, the higher their social rank. Some feel that they cannot be successful if their income is not as high as everyone else around them. Income does not indicate success because it does not determine ones intelligence, skills, motivation, or work ethic.

18 Opening paragraph #6 For me, it is more important who you are. I have 3 reasons: you can have a lot of things but be unhappy, the things that you have don’t define who you are and life is about being yourself. What do you notice about this opening paragraph?

19 The third of the three… Compose your thoughts in grammatically complete sentences. Remember: Good sentences are essential for academic writing. Good sentences have straightforward messages and are grammatically complete. Grammatically complete sentences are assumed.
