States of Matter Chapter 2 Activity 2 1

What do you see?

States of Matter Solid Liquid Gas

Add energy Add energy particles flow particles vibrate

Heating Curve areas where temperature is increasing
Notice the areas where the temperature stays the same.

Heating Curve for Water
1. The oblique lines show where the solid, liquid, and gas respectively, are being heated. The temperature rises during these intervals. 2. The 1st horizontal plateau represents the melting process for the substance. Note that the temperature stays constant during the time while the substance is melting. BOILING MELTING TIme 3. The 2nd horizontal plateau represents the boiling process for the substance. Note that the temperature stays constant during the time while the substance is boiling.

Check this out……. Smartboard States of Matter

Let's go the other way!!!!! If you were to begin with water vapor and remove energy instead of adding it, what would happen? Condensation 1. Gas cools F to E Freezing 2. Gas condenses E to D 3. Liquid cools D to C 4. Liquid freezes C to B 5. Solid cools B to A

Sublimation Melting Freezing Condensation Deposition
