3 You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD; He is their help and their shield. The LORD has been mindful of us; He will bless us… (Psalms 115:11-12 NKJV)

4 Dan. 2:44; Mt. 5:1-2 poor in spirit mourn meek hunger & thirst for righteousness merciful pure in heart peacemakers persecuted for righteousness IV. You are the salt... A. in your workplace, when you are 1. merciful- when problems, mistakes, and vengeance happen at work, be known for mercy---love enemies 2. pure in heart- you congratulate the one who got the promotion you sought? 3. hunger/thirst rx- as M Dun challenged us--when asked “what did you do this weekend,” what can you say that might make them think--something you saw, heard, or thought about that really matters! B. Of your family 1. poor in spirit- recognize God role = honor parents, lead my children (not provoke by letting them lead themselves), submit to husband, nourish wife---at some point, they will notice you are different than others. 2. peacemakers- as spouse or sibling, are you? 3. mourn (// labor-rest, Mt. 11:28)- for sin (self, others)— a. tell your children how destructive the sin they see is b. don’t only be angry about the perversion of our culture---mourn over where it puts and leads ppl C. Of your friends (clubs, school, volunteer, etc) 1. meek- say “Yes” or “No” with strength and humility 2. those persecuted for rx- your absence...from that party, silence when band plays a hymn or lewd song, your belief that there is one Lord, faith, baptism

5 You Are the Salt of the Earth
Matt. 5:13

6 You are the salt of the earth - salt is “mixed in” Mt. 9:10-12; 1 Cor
You are the salt of the earth - salt is “mixed in” Mt. 9:10-12; 1 Cor. 5:10 - salt is distinct Dan. 1:3-8 a. salt is “mixed in” i. salt is not served “alone” but it does not lose its distinct taste. ii. Christians must be mindful to strike the right balance in this area (A) 1 Cor. 5:10 even Jesus was with, trying to teach sinners, not along for the ride practicing sin. (B) Ps. 1:1 when we stop trying to teach, become more accepting of other ways—danger. (C) With conviction and wisdom, like Jesus did, we can lead men to God. (D) Without conviction and wisdom, we compromise and are led away from God, like Solomon. b. salt has an unmistakably distinct flavor i. When salt is present, you know it! You can always taste the difference between food that is/not salted. ii. Daniel (A) 1:3 For a slave in a foreign land (or young, away from parents), the desire to blend in is common. (B) 1:8 If he's kicked out of training, he becomes a common captive (loses his spot on the team). (I) the meat, drinks violated God's law to the Jews but was normal for that society. (II) we don’t know if any other Jews objected or if Daniel was the only one to speak up. (C) Who “tasted this salt”? SMA, other students (Jews), chief of the eunuchs, any who asked or heard. iii. This past week, did you have any opportunities, like Daniel, to determine in your heart that you will not compromise? If you followed through, you are the salt of the earth. If not--

7 but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?
You are the salt of the earth but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? - Heb. 10:26-27; 2 Pet. 2:20-22 II. if salt loses its flavor (KJ savor, lacking taste) how shall it be seasoned? A. Have you ever seasoned salt to make it salty? No, salt is the seasoning and if salt loses its saltiness, can you “re-salt” the salt? No! B. Heb. 10:26-27 1. This is not saying Christians cannot be forgiven of sin 2. It teaches what Jesus said---if the salt loses. . ., there is not another way to be the salt of the earth. 3. Sin is what makes us lose our flavor and we cannot be seasoned while we are guilty of sin. C. 2 Pet. 2:20-22 1. what they already know is what can make them the salt of the earth. 2. what else can I learn if I reject what I already know?

8 You are the salt of the earth
but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men - Psalm 1:1-2 III. It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out... A. What if salt is there but no one can taste it? opposite of Ps. 1:1-2 1. When we stop trying to teach others because we enjoy walking, standing, sitting with = more accepting of a. Not enough to avoid influencing them for wrong---if we offer no influence for good, what good are we? b. Without love and wisdom, we compromise, have no influence, and are being influenced. 2. Blessed is the man who leads others to God when they walk, stand, and sit with others. Prov. 11:30 B. Jesus warns that this type of Christian will be thrown out and trampled, just like 1. five unprepared virgins were locked out (Mt. 25) 2. the lazy servant was cast into outer darkness (Mt. 25) 3. the sheep sent to everlasting life and goats to everlasting punishment (Mt. 25) 4. the unforgiving servant sent to the torturers (Mt. 18:34) D. Christians who are not noticeably distinct from the world will be lost in hell. C. Examples 1. What good was Eve by inviting Adam to eat? 2. What good was Adam when he joined her---an opportunity to be salt but lost his flavor and imitated her 3. Acts 18:26 what good would A/P have been if they said nothing to Apollos?

9 Dan. 2:44; Mt. 4:17,23; 5:1-12 poor in spirit (Lk. 18:13) mourn (Mt
