5 Writing Writing Workshop model is used to teach writing.
Mini Lesson Independent Work/Partner Collaboration One to One Teacher Conference Students will write in the following genres: realistic fiction, literary essay, informational essay, argument based essay, myth, and memoir. Writing partnerships are an essential part of class. Students will use a writing notebook and binder. Each evening’s homework is to continue the work started in class for an extra 20 minutes. Most stages of the writing process are graded. Stages of the writing process are weighted differently.

6 Reading Reading is taught using the Reading Workshop model.
Mini Lesson/Read Aloud Independent Reading/Partner Collaboration One to One Teacher Conference Students select independent reading books in a variety of genres. 40 Book Goal for the Year/Raffle Genre Goals Scholastic Students learn to self assess, select “just-right” books, and build reading stamina. Students have daily opportunities to talk about their books (read books independently, with partners, and in book clubs). Students will use a reading notebook and binder. Reading responses are weighted 2 times.

7 Student Expectations for Reading
Read for minutes per day in classroom. Read for 30 minutes at home each evening. Read from a variety of genres. Confer with teacher to learn and apply new skills, enhance fluency and self monitor for meaning. Apply comprehension strategies to all reading and document thinking in the form of quick jots and as entries in reading notebook. Participate appropriately during partner share or book club meetings. Keep a basic reading log and a trail of post-its. Self assess and set reading goals.

8 Social Studies Knowledge of the past helps us understand
the present and prepare for the future. Map and Geography skills are integrated into all units. Major Units: Greece, Rome, Byzantine Empire, Beginnings of Christianity and Islam, Middle Ages. Projects will be assigned throughout the year. Students are given study guides when test dates are announced (a week’s notice is given for a test).

11 Extra Help: Students are always welcome to see me for extra help. Students who wish to attend extra help are asked to give me at least a day’s notice. Scheduling of extra help will be arranged on an individual basis. Students are to come to extra help with specific questions.
