5. READING LESSON: MIND MAPPING TOPICS 25 MINUTES
You will create a mind map of the universal topics in To Kill a Mockingbird. From this, you will begin to trace the development of themes in the novel. Follow the directions below. You may listen to music while you work.
Obtain one 11X14 piece of white paper and a selection of markers/pencils.
Label the center of your paper “Universal Topics in TKAM”.
Create the following 5 branches and note that some have sub-categories:
Prejudice: gender, racial, social class; Courage; Gender Roles; Education; Perspective (You may add others of your own choosing).
Include specific evidence from the book to support each universal topic (give chap/page#)

6. 15 MINUTES
Developing Theme
Remember, a theme is the message that an author is sending to the reader. Authors weave universal topics into their stories and turn them into themes.
Honors: Select three universal topics from your map, and based on the evidence gathered, write three theme statements that you believe Harper Lee wants the reader to understand.
Academic: Select one universal topic from your map, and based on the evidence gathered, write one theme statement that you believe Harper Lee wants the reader to understand.

7. Begin Reading! MINUTES
For homework, you will read chapters 14, 15, & 16 and answer the following questions:
Chapter 14: Why has Aunt Alexandra come to live with the Finches?
Chapter 15: Why are the men gathered at the jail dressed as if it is cold outside? Why do they leave?
Chapter 16: What is the primary conflict in this book? Find a passage that explains the conflict and record the quote.

8. Clean-up & Announcements 5 minutes
