Searching for Water in South Sudan
In South Sudan, millions of women and children trek for up to eight hours a day to collect water from marshes, ditches, or hand-dug wells where water is often contaminated with parasites and bacteria. The results are sickness, even death.
3
The people of South Sudan often have no choice about what they drink
The people of South Sudan often have no choice about what they drink. Water, however tainted, is needed for survival. Drinking this water, which often carries disease and parasites, can lead to illness and death, especially for young children.
4
“Water for South Sudan”
Salva Dut, the man who inspired the book A Long Walk to Water, started “Water for South Sudan,” an organization that builds wells in South Sudan. Each well that is built helps bring clean drinking water to villages.

How can you help? Participate in Altadeña’s Water Walk Fundraiser!
7th Graders will (voluntarily) walk on the track with two gallons of water to raise awareness for the need of clean drinking water. Students will raise donations for every lap they walk. Supporters can donate or pledge any amount of money to the fundraiser and help South Sudan get more water. Click here to donate money!
6
“Will you pledge money for every lap I walk?”
Students will go to their family, friends, neighbors, and communities to ask for pledge donations. “Will you pledge money for every lap I walk?” Donors may pledge any amount of money. After the walk, you will contact them and tell them how many laps you walked. Or, donors can choose to pledge a flat amount (regardless of how many laps you walk).

Walking around the track helps us to imagine what life is like for people in South Sudan as they search for water and is a way for us to raise money towards the cause.

In 2017, we raised $2,750. This year, we want to raise even more!

Take a look at last year’s Water Walk!
