Who Is Writing Our Books?
Kristin Marshall, Trevor Elm, Deon Davis
2
Premise We have chosen three gender-stereotypical occupations (Education, Political Science, and Nursing) to see if the ratio of male-to-female authors for college course required texts reflects the stereotype given by society (i.e. women are more likely to be in the education field, males in the political science field, and women in the nursing field). We also looked to investigate, as we went higher in the academic scale (4000 level and above), whether or not more male authors are prevalent. This is due to the question of whether or not it is more likely for a male to have a higher ranked position, regardless of the gender bias of the occupation.

Data Collection Process
We used the Stockton University Bookstore website to choose all Education/Political Science/Nursing Courses for the Spring of 2016. We then viewed the required texts for the courses and researched the gender of the authors We computed the percentage of male and female authors for each level Finally, we combined all of the data to view the overall statistics for the School of Education/ Political Science /Nursing at Stockton University
4
Research/Context For the research part of our Service Learning Project, we compared our results with those of the same schools at Rowan University We used the same data collection process using the Rowan University Bookstore Webpage

As the difficulty of classes increases, there is an increase of male authors.

School of Education At a glance of the overall data, it would seem that Rowan University is superior at choosing an equal amount of men and women authors in the School of Education. However, Stockton has 31 required texts whereas Rowan only has 12. The comparison is not significant due to low sample size. School of Political Science (Stockton U)
Conclusion: Overall, in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Stockton University for Political Science, 91.69% of the authors of the required texts are written by male authors. There a very few female author across the board with female only securing 8.31% of the total authorship of the required texts.

School of Political Science (Rowan U)
The following is data collected in the same process, but for the School of Education at Rowan University. This data is not significant due to an extremely low sample size.

School of Political Science
Stockton University Rowan University At both universities, there is a high percentage of male authors for books in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Only 8% of the Stockton books have been written by women, and 22% at Rowan University.

There were more female authors in 4 of the 5 separate levels of courses. Also note the increase of male authors as the level increases.

The data is not significantly different due to the small sample size for both focus groups. There are more female authors in each course level for Rowans sample size.

Why/why not is this feminist activism?
Our project may be considered feminist activism because we are looking at real life data to determine if gender biases still exist in the working world. We discovered that almost 92% of Political Science texts are written by males. Either little women in this field desire to write texts, or it is still a male dominated occupation. Over 80% of Education books and 70% of Nursing texts are written by females. These majors are socially considered as female jobs, and so it is not surprising that a majority of the authors are women. Although this may seem as a positive, it proves that women may chose a “safe” major rather than choosing more male-dominated fields such as Political Science.
