Beryllium Management Activities at ITER
Confirmation for the use of Personal Air Samplers at ITER Confirmation of associated Responsibilities
2
Objectives of this meeting
For discussion and clarification Should IO staff always use Personal Air Samplers (PAS) when visiting/entering beryllium facilities? Who should have the responsibilities and budget for associated activities including the following: Management of the PAS system Beryllium worker Training Beryllium sample analyses Supply of Personal and Respiratory Protective Equipment (PPE/RPE) Personal exposure record keeping ITER Be Management Program or Code of Practice Medical surveillance Other Be component/safety related activities
3
ITER Requirement for PAS
Implementation of Personnel Air Samplers (PAS) as part of Worker Protection Program Requirement taken from RPrS JET policy – PAS is used for all entries in to a beryllium controlled zone – 99% show no beryllium contamination (below Level of Detection)
4
Near Term Approach Implemented
To address the already existing needs, a 30 month contract has been placed with CCFE(JET) – it expires March 2019 assuming the funding level is adequate. 10 PAS units purchased (including) maintenance, cleaning, preparation for use, analysis of samples, shipping to suppliers IO-CT staff collect PAS at Be suppliers and use for entries to potentially contaminated facilities. IO-CT Staff to repackage the PAS and organize shipment back to CCFE. CCFE will analyze samples, provide results and prepare PAS for next use. No system is yet implemented for Personal exposure record keeping.
5
Costs for Using PAS Purchase cost of PAS – 900 € each
10 units purchased by CCFE on behalf of IO. PAS calibration, preparation for shipment, packaging, sample cost and sample analysis – 77 € / PAS use. Shipping of PAS to and from CCFE – At Cost. Management costs not included Organization, logistics, tracking, storage of results,..
6
Other Beryllium support Costs
2 Day Beryllium Training program held at JET. One training session in current contract (planned in April 2017). Responsibility for organizing future sessions and associated budget – TBC Refresher courses are considered every two years Smear and Analysis services 62 € for 5 samples (includes 8 € per smear analysis) Shipping of smear and return at cost Management costs not included

Contract Overview IBMC/PBS16 have a beryllium support contract in place with CCFE including: Service management for Personal Air Samplers (PAS). Be analyses (surface and airborne). Preparation and delivery of a Be worker training program for IO (16 persons). Development of Standard cleaning procedure for beryllium components (FW) Validation of Be packaging/storage conditions Audit and information exchange with IO suppliers (used to identify Be facility concerns)
