Cells & Systems Unit 2 Research assignment
2
Cells and systems inquiry project
You will be responsible to conduct research on a human body system and a disease or disorder of that system. You will get 2-3 classes to research on your own. Due date:

4
The Circulatory System
Heart, blood, blood vessels Circulates blood through the body Blood contains nutrients, waste, dissolved gas etc. Why is it essential?
5
The Digestive System Esophagus, liver, pancreas, stomach, gall bladder, rectum etc. Breaks down food into nutrients usable by cells. Expels waste from the body. Why is it essential?
6
The Respiratory System
Trachea, lungs, diaphragm Inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide Lungs transport dissolved gases to circulatory system.
7
The Excretory System Kidneys
Filters waste from the circulatory system so it can be excreted from the body. Why is it essential?
8
The Nervous System
9
Sensory Awareness Goal: maintain optimal internal environment for the cells Nervous system: controls the response to stimuli Stimuli examples: temperature, pain etc. (skin, nerves, spinal cord) Endocrine system: produce chemical messages and produce hormones Hormone examples: Adrenaline, insulin, growth hormone (glands)
10
How they all work together Example: Circulatory and Respiratory
Cells in the body need to be connected with air. Respiratory system: exchanges the oxygen and carbon dioxide (dissolved gases). Circulatory system: transports the dissolved gases. In the tissue of the lungs, there are alveoli (air sacs) that are surrounded by capillaries (blood vessels). At this point the dissolved gases can pass back and forth. Oxygen leaves the alveoli and enters the blood vessel to be transported throughout the body. Carbon dioxide leaves the blood vessels and enters the alveoli to be transported outside the body via the lungs.
