4. Summary- own words
Two migrant workers, George and Lennie, travel in a friendly companionship along the Salinas River. They are not related; however, they are comfortable with each other. The reader learns that George is the father, leader figure and Lennie is mentally-retarded and very simple. He is obedient to everything George tells him to do. George makes it clear they are fleeing Weed because Lennie did something bad and starting fresh on a ranch. By the end of the chapter, they are approaching the new ranch.
This section’s purpose is to present the exposition: setting, background information and characterization (1-2).

5. Setting Soledad, Southern CA 1930s Thursday Evening
Summer evening; warm outside
“A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River…in front of the low horizontal limb of a giant sycamore there is an ash pile made by many fires; the limb is worn smooth by men who have sat on it” (2).

6. Characterization of main characters (include how they have developed over the plot of novel. Include inferences.
George: small, quick, dark of face, restless eyes, strong features, well defined body. Seems to be the leader of the companionship.
Lennie: George’s opposite; huge, shapeless, large pale eyes, sloping shoulders, drags feet, arms hang loosely
“The first man’s [huge companion] dropped his blankets and flung himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool…” (3).
“Lennie, who had been watching, imitated George exactly” (4).

Stilted (adj): stiffly- describing both men as they get up after resting
Brusquely (adv): abrupt, blunt manner- describing Lennie’s demeanor

Foreshadow
“Lennie- if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush”(15).
Allusion- Physical settings “Gabilan mountains” (2).
Word Choice/Imagery- warm colors and weather to describe scenery and soft sounds of Nature
Dialect- bindle, knapsack, work cards, bus tickets to show migrant lifestyle and time period

9. Archetypal Characters and Settings
River- water is pure and cleaning; symbolic of baptism. Lennie and George are cleansed of their previous sins in Weed and reborn.
Clearing by the river- Garden of Eden; safety and peace.
Ranch- hard work and life’s possibilities. This is when the reader works hard in life to achieve their goals.
Wise Fool- Lennie; mentally inferior but able to speak the truth about
others and reveal their weaknesses.
Average Man- George; this is the everyday man. Readers identify
with him.
Mother Figure- Aunt Clara “Lady, huh? Don’t even remember who that lady was. That was your own Aunt Clara” (9).
