2 Absolute & Relative Location

3 How many ways can you come with describing where you live
How many ways can you come with describing where you live? What are they?

4 Relative Location The location of a place compared to another place
Example: Columbus, OH is in the central part of Ohio. Ohio is east of Indiana.

5 Relative Location When would relative location be used?
When would it not be helpful?

6 Absolute Location An exact spot on Earth.
Example: Times Square, NYC is located at 40° 45' N, 73° 59' W

7 Absolute Location When would absolute location be used?
When would it not be helpful?

9 Facts about Latitude Latitude lines measure distance (in degrees) north or south of the Equator.

10 Facts about Latitude Latitude lines are also called parallels, because they never meet.

11 Facts about Latitude The Equator is zero degrees latitude. Half of the parallels are north of the equator and half are south of it.

12 Facts about Latitude Latitude lines run east and west. They are drawn around the globe. Parallels that are above the equator are labeled north. Parallels that are below the equator are labeled south.

13 Facts about Latitude As you move away from the equator lines of latitude increase. Bigger numbers are farther away from the Equator.

14 Facts about Latitude The North Pole is 90° N latitude. It is the farthest point north. The South Pole is 90° S latitude. It is the farthest point south.

16 Facts about Longitude Longitude lines measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.

17 Longitude Notes Lines of longitude are also called meridians.
Longitude lines are different from parallels. They DO meet. Lines of longitude come together at the North and South Poles.

18 Longitude Notes The Prime Meridian is zero degrees longitude. It runs through Greenwich, England.

19 Longitude Notes Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England

20 Longitude Notes Half of the meridians are west of the prime meridian and half are east of it.

21 Longitude Notes Longitude lines run north and south. They are drawn from top to bottom on the globe.

22 Longitude Notes Meridians to the left of the Prime Meridian are measured west. Meridians to the right of the Prime Meridian are measured east.

23 Longitude Notes Because the Earth is a sphere (circle), it is 360° around. Therefore, 180° is the half way point for longitude lines.

24 Longitude Notes As you move away from the Prime Meridian lines of longitude increase. Bigger numbers are farther away from the Prime Meridian.

25 Longitude Notes 180° is the highest line of longitude. It is also called the International Date Line. This is where each day begins and ends. 180° can be labeled east or west or not at all since there is only one line named 180°

27 Understanding Latitude and Longitude
Together latitude and longitude lines create a grid Just like your grid maps that you created of your room at home, lines on globes and maps provide information that can help you easily locate places on the earth too.

28 Absolute Location Only one place can be found at the point where lines cross one another on the grid We can use this point to find the exact location of any place on earth. We call this absolute location. The grid system formed by lines of latitude and longitude makes it easy to find the absolute location of any place in the world.

29 Coordinates Absolute location is given as a set of numbers called coordinates. Coordinates are always listed latitude first and then longitude. Examples: 45°N, 90°W 30°S, 110°E The grid system formed by lines of latitude and longitude makes it easy to find the absolute location of any place in the world.

30 Coordinates Sometimes we have to estimate the coordinates of a location. We can’t show all the numbers on a map because that would be too crowded to read.

31 Using Latitude and Longitude
Let’s practice!

32 For the remainder of the period, work on completing the Coordinate Practice paper. KEEP this paper in your binder for tomorrow.
