1 Range Voting

2 What is Range Voting? From Wikipedia: Similar to:
“Range voting (also called ratings summation, average voting, cardinal ratings, score voting, 0–99 voting, the score system, or the point system) is a voting method for one-seat elections under which voters score each candidate, the scores are added up, and the candidate with the highest score wins.” Similar to: Surveys Media reviews “Hot or Not” Athletic judgment processes

3 What is Range Voting? (cont.)
Assumes the “right” winner is the one whose election results in least amount of social dissatisfaction, counterbalancing sheer numbers Bayesian Regret Goodbye Majority Rule!!! Ex: I might win the majority of votes, but the losing minority is more dissatisfied with my election than my majority would have been if my opponent had won.

4 Historical Usage Sparta? http://rangevoting.org/BPSparta.html

5 For Example

6 Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem
Ranged voting satisfies the criteria of a deterministic voting system, with non-imposition, non-dictatorship, monotonicity, and independence of irrelevant alternatives (sometimes), but the method does not violate Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem because it utilizes scoring rather than ranking (violating Arrow’s universality criterion).

7 Advantages of Range Voting
Overlapping Support? No Problem! Taft/Roosevelt in 1912 (Wilson says “Thanks Mr. Bull Moose”) Nader/Gore in 2000 (Bush says “Thanks Green Party”) At least that guy didn’t win Proponents: William Poundstone, Gaming the Vote: Why Elections Aren’t Fair (and What We Can Do About It)

8 Problems Voter ignorance Preference isn’t 1-10 Use of tactical voting
Range voting is kinda complicated Preference isn’t 1-10 Subjectivity Use of tactical voting Sincerity Min/Maxing (like in RPG’s) The cost of change

9 Discussion Would you advocate the use of this system in politics? In any election? Can you think of any other problems with this system of voting? Any questions?
