GERUNDS & GERUND PHRASES:
A GERUND is an “-ing” word, such as “jumping” or “doing” A GERUND PHRASE begins with a GERUND but adds extra modifiers (words that add details) EXAMPLES: Jumping on a trampoline Doing homework A GERUND PHRASE is always used as a NOUN (a thing) in a sentence: Jumping on a trampoline is good exercise. Doing homework helps students earn good grades.

Arbitration DEF: The process in which parties involved in a dispute allow an impartial party to settle their differences POSSIBLE SENTENCE TOPIC: What could require arbitration? EXAMPLE: Getting in a disagreement with your neighbor about noise could require arbitration.

Attaché DEF: A person assigned to serve in a specific capacity on a diplomatic mission POSSIBLE SENTENCE TOPIC: What might be part of the job of an attaché? EXAMPLE: ___(gerund phrase)___ might be part of the job of an attaché.

Covenant DEF: A binding agreement; a legal contract

Discretion DEF: a. The quality of using good judgement and self-restraint; the quality of acting wisely based on an awareness of the potential consequences of one’s actions b. Insular DEF: a. Suggestive of the isolated life on an island b. Status Quo DEF: The existing condition or state of affairs
