3. Subtraction on the Number Line
To subtract using the number line:
Start at the first number.
To subtract a positive -5 move left (towards negative 5 spaces)
To subtract a negative – (-5) move right (towards positive 5 spaces)
*When subtracting you are “taking away”
To subtract a negative you want to take away negative and move positive!

Any subtraction problem can be written as an addition problem.
Keep the first number the same.
Change subtraction to addition.
Change the second number to its opposite.
*Now follow the rules for addition.
Same Signs ADD the absolute value.
Different Signs SUBTRACT the absolute value.
Remember you could also use the number line or score board!
