How many sig figs are there in the following? a) b) c) Express the answer using the correct number of sig figs. a) 45.0 x 270 = 12,000 b) 133 – 20 = 113 View notes section below for explanations. 1a) The decimals only affect trailing zeros. Trailing zeros are only significant when a decimal point is placed within the number. 1b) Leading zeros are never significant. 1c) Trailing zeros are not significant when there is no decimal point in the number (look back at 1a). 2a) For multiplication and division, you are to provide your answer in the least amount of sig figs has 3 sig figs, while 270 has 2, so your answer was to provided in 2 sig figs. 12,000 has only 2 sig figs as the trailing zeros are not significant because there is no decimal present (look back at 1a and 1c). 2b) For addition and subtraction, you are to provide your answer in the least amount of decimal places. Neither 133 or 20 have decimal places, so your answer was to be 113.
