1 Global status of rice fortification programs
Kyrgyz Republic USA Nepal Bhutan Myanmar Venezuela Mali Liberia Benin Rep. of Congo Philippines Papua New Guinea Nicaragua Costa Rica Panama Colombia Ecuador Peru India: Odisha, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu Bangladesh Malaysia Singapore Brazil Although there are only 6 countries with mandatory rice fortification legislation, many other rice fortification activities occur. This map is an attempt to visually capture where other rice fortification activities are happening. Most fortification activities are in social safety net programs. These are usually government or NGO programs that provide rice for school meals or in food aid packages. Three countries (Venezuela, India, and Bangladesh) have voluntary standards for fortified rice. In these countries, producers are not required to fortify, but if they do, they need to follow the set standards. Market based activities are countries where partners tell us consumers can find fortified rice in a grocery store or market. Workplace benefit programs mean fortified rice is being provided to workers by a company, usually as a part of their provided lunch program. We’ve heard about these in garment factories in Bangladesh and construction companies in Singapore. Lastly, fortified rice is being used in two research studies in India.
