1 Welcome to Physics !! Mrs. Ann Nemeck

2 What is Physics?

3 Day 1 Laboratory Investigation
What you need to know ---- Dimensional Analysis Trig --- SOH CAH TOA Definition and creation of vectors Definition and difference between distance and displacement Pick a Partner – and let’s see what you can remember

4 Clinometer

5

6 Vectors & Vector Diagrams
a quantity or phenomenon that has two independent properties: magnitude and direction. An arrow is used to represent a vector

7 Vector Diagram (Can you calculate the distance? What about displacement?)

8 Difference between Distance and Displacement !!!

9 Definitions Distance: Displacement: Also-----
how far something has traveled. Displacement: how far something is from where it started.  Also----- Distance is a scalar quantity (magnitude). Displacement is often a vector quantity (magnitude and direction). An object's displacement can never be greater than the distance traveled.

10 Dimensional Analysis Key terms: Key skill: Unit Conversion factor
Fractions !!!!! (You did this in Chemistry  )

11 Key Terms Unit --- Conversion Factor ---
a word or abbreviation that comes after a number ; that describes the number EVERY NUMBER IN PHYSICS MUST HAVE A UNIT Ex: 10 miles, 10 dollars, 10 miles/hour Conversion Factor --- A fraction, where the numerator is equal to the denominator, but the units are different. Ex: 100cm/1m, 1mile/5280ft, 1 century/100years

12 Prefixes Used in SI units

13 Dimensional Analysis Practice
Page 7 in textbook Practice problems 5-8

14 Significant Figures

15 Practice Sig Fig’s  Practice problems 9-12 on page 8 in the textbook

16 Precision vs. Accuracy Degree of exactness = precision
How well the results of measurement agree with a ‘real’ value = accuracy

17 Graphing Data Copy: ‘Problem Solving Strategies: Plotting Line Graph‘
Page 16 in your textbook

18 Graphing Relationships

19 Linear Relationship

20 Nonlinear Relationships

21 Inverse Relationship (nonlinear)
