What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system is a group of glands within a organism which creates hormones. These hormones are then transported through the circulatory to the far targeted organs.
3
What glands are in the endocrine system?
There are 8 primary glands in the endocrine system. These glands include the pineal gland, pituitary gland, ovaries, pancreas, testis, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, and the adrenal glands. Our vertebrates contain the main control centre for all of the glands, this is the hypothalamus. In addition to the glands are the organs that have secondary endocrine functions such as, bones, kidney, gonads, liver and heart.
4
Hormones in the endocrine system
There are 3 major structures to hormones. These include eicosanoids, steroids and amino acids. With these structures come the regulation of our natural activities. Such as, digestion, metabolism, respiration, reproduction, tissue function, sleep, stress, growth and development, movement, and sensory perception.
5
Disease within the endocrine system
There are several diseases within the endocrine system, for example diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease and obesity. These can be caused from, lack of glands, lack of regulation with releasing hormones, incorrect signaling , diminished and also enlargement. There are 3 kinda of endocrine diseases. They are primary, secondary, tertiary. Primary disease is the action of downstream glands, secondary is a problem with the pituitary gland and lastly tertiary is the dis function of the hypothalamus releasing hormones.
