3 Kansas leads the world in the success of each student
A NEW Vision for Kansas ... Jay - This is the vision for education in Kansas and the redesign initiative is all about aligning school systems to this vision. “Each” – personalizing learning for each student. What do you want success to mean for your students? Kansas leads the world in the success of each student KANSAS STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION |

4 CPR and Health Standards
In 2018 Kansas will be revising the PE/Health Standards. This will be led by KAPHERD and will most likely align to the National Standards, which include CPR. The SBOE amended the current health standards to include CPR in advance of the new standards development. The American Heart Association has kits that will be made available to schools for free. This is hands-on only CPR. Chest Compression and AED (defibrillator).

5 What does it mean for our Schools?
This can be taught in any grades Health is a requirement for graduation, CPR is not. By including CPR in the model health standards this increases the likelihood that students will graduate with the basic CPR skills. The lessons have already been created by the American Heart Association (AHA) Teachers need to coordinate with the Service Centers or with AHA directly to get the kits for the training

6 What does it mean for students?
Goal: Any student that enrolls in Health in the school year or later will be taught the Model Standard that is associated with CPR. Any student that has already passed Health is fine. The majority of districts, according to KAPHERD, already teach CPR beyond these standards and will not need a kit. Does not require a teacher to be CPR certified. Takes approximately 30 minutes to teach. AHA contact information: or (913)

7 ESSA Application Update
Application was due to the USDOE in September Public posting in July ESSA Advisory Council reviewed prior to sending to the USDOE Been in consultation with USDOE since late December Kansas is currently providing clarification to USDOE on our plan. Approval is expected on or before January 18, 2018 Recognize John Morton and Give kudos to Colleen’s team.

8 ESSA Application Update
The Kansas goal for the ESSA plan was to be compliant with the federal law. Anything that is included in the KansansCAN vision for education that is outside of federal law will not be included in the plan. Kansas set bold and ambitious goals in the KansansCan vision that include a few components that are required under the ESSA law. Two particular goals are the percent of students that demonstrate an academic readiness for postsecondary success and graduation rates. Both of these measures were set in order for Kansas to lead the world in the success of each student. One of the overall goals of ESSA was to give more control back to states. Kansas takes this seriously and will hold ourselves accountable to the success of all students. Give kudos to Sandy Guidry, Colleen’s team.
