2 Jeffersonian Republicanism
People should control the government and a simple government best suited the needs of the people. Jefferson tried to shrink the government and cut cost wherever possible

3 John Marshall and the Supreme Court
Marbury V. Madison The Federalist chief justice John Marshall declared that part of the Judiciary act of 1789 was unconstitutional The decision strengthened the Supreme Court by establishing the precedent of Judicial Review -The ability of the Supreme Court to declare a law unconstitutional

4 The Louisiana Purchase
At a price of $15 million the Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of the United States President Jefferson picked Lewis and Clark to organize and lead a group to explore the new territory The explorers brought back valuable information from the west and showed that transcontinental travel was possible

6 Madison and The War of 1812 The British and French were at war
The American’s focused their anger on the British, mainly for their impressment policy The practice of seizing Americans at sea and drafting them in to the British navy.

7 Hawks demand War Madison decided to commit America to war
funding cuts and a lack of popular support, left the American military with few volunteers The British were preoccupied with Napoleon in Europe The War ends in a draw

8 Consequences of the War
End of the Federalist Party Encouraged American manufacturers to produce goods previously available form Britain only Reaffirmed American independence

9 What about Native Americans?
Native Americans are on the losing side again Tribes very much weakened and resistance to American expansion disappears American Expansion races to the Texas border

10 Monroe’s Foreign Policy
European powers were attempting to move back into their old colonies Monroe warns the European powers to stay out of the Western Hemisphere The United States would consider such actions dangerous to its peace and safety These Principles became known as the Monroe Doctrine

11 The Missouri Compromise
Missouri is admitted to the union as a slave state Maine is admitted as a free state In the future any state above 36* latitude line would be free state any state admitted below this line would be a slave state
