Warm Up #18 What are some examples of nonrenewable resources?
What are some examples of renewable resources?
2
Lesson 1: Energy Resources
Ch. 4 Energy Resources Lesson 1: Energy Resources
3
Essential Questions What are the main sources of nonrenewable energy?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using nonrenewable energy resources? How can individuals help manage nonrenewable resources wisely?
4
How do you use energy resources? Activity
In the US today, the energy used for most daily activities is easily available at the flip of a switch or the push of a button. How do you use energy in your daily activities? What are some instances that you use energy during a 24-hr period? What type of energy did you use? How long did you use it?
5
Sources of energy Nonrenewable resources – resources that are used faster than they can be replaced by natural processes Renewable resources – resources that can be replaced by natural processes in a relatively short amount of time
6
Nonrenewable energy resources
Fossil fuels – coal, oil, petroleum, natural gas Depends on: Type of organic matter Temperature and pressure Length of time organic matter was buried
7
Nonrenewable energy resources
Coal Formation Oil and Natural Gas Formation
8
Advantages/disadvantages of fossil fuels
Fairly easy and direct to change energies Relatively inexpensive and easy to transport Disadvantages – Limited supply Disrupts habitats Causes pollution
9
Nuclear energy – energy released from atomic reactions
10
Nuclear energy Advantages – Disadvantages –
relatively small amount of uranium produces large amount of energy doesn’t pollute Disadvantages – uses nonrenewable resource uranium can lead to a release of harmful radioactive substances waste materials are highly radioactive and dangerous
11
Managing nonrenewable energy resources
93% of US energy comes from fossil fuels More than 22% of world’s total energy used in US Reclamation – a process in which mined land must be recovered with soil and replanted with vegetation
