Is Nicotine Addictive? Addiction is defined as the body’s physical or mental need for a drug or other substance. Nicotine is a stimulant drug that speeds up the vital processes, which leads to addiction. The three stages of tobacco addiction include; Physical, Mental/Emotional and Social. Physically your body craves the nicotine, mentally you think you need this drug and socially you can lose touch with your relationships.

What is Snuff? Snuff is finely ground tobacco that is held in the mouth. This type of tobacco is also called Smokeless tobacco. Smokeless tobacco is not safe. This type of tobacco can lead to serious health problems including: mouth and stomach cancers. People who use smokeless tobacco often lose their sense of taste and smell.

Statistics of Cigarette Use
Tobacco kills up to half of its users. Tobacco kills more than 7 million people each year. Around 6 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use. Around the world over 890,000 non-smokers are being exposed to second-hand smoke. WHO, 2017 Tobacco kills more than 480,000 Americans annually. This is more than 1,315 people a day!!! Effects of Second Hand Smoke
Secondhand Smoke- Tobacco smoke in the air that is inhaled by nonsmokers Nonsmokers who breathe secondhand smoke are likely to develop some of the same health problems as people who make the choice to smoke. These health problems include: pneumonia, bronchitis, headache, coughing, asthma and in extreme cases, different types of cancers. Many public buildings have banned smoking due to the health risks of secondhand smoke that effect nonsmokers.

Harmful Effects of Tobacco on the Body
Skin- Smoking makes people look older because their skin starts to wrinkle at an earlier pace. Mouth, Teeth and Throat- Smoke causes bad breath and stains your teeth. Carcinogens (chemicals) in the smoke can cause mouth or throat cancer. Lungs- Tar in the smoke coats the inside of the lungs and can lead to Emphysema (alveoli in the lungs are damaged). This can also lead to lung cancer. Heart- Increases heart rate, which narrows the vessels causing the heart to pump/work harder. This strains the heart and contributes to heart attacks.

Harmful Effects of Tobacco on the Body
Fingers- Leaves fingers yellow and stained. Stomach, Bladder and Colon- Lead to stomach ulcers (sores). This can also lead to stomach and colon cancer. Smoking makes a person ten times more likely to develop bladder cancer and doubles the risk for colon cancer. Brain- Nicotine is carried from the lungs to the brain in seven seconds. This causes the brain to want more nicotine and ultimately lead to addiction. Blood Vessels- Carbon monoxide from the smoke reduces the amount of oxygen that the blood carries throughout the body. This ultimately leads to the bodies organs receiving less oxygen from the blood.
