The first commercial transatlantic telephone service between Canada and the United Kingdom is inaugurated. Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King speaks with his British counterpart, Stanley Baldwin. Transatlantic calls will require the assistance of an operator until overseas direct dialing is introduced in 1956, nearly 30 years later.
