Pop’s Bridge By Eve Bunting Illustrated by C.F. Payne Genre: Historical Fiction – a story that is set in the past. Skills: Compare and Contrast – When you compare and contrast, you think about how things are alike and different. Story Structure – Includes the story’s setting, characters, and plot. Infer/Predict – Use text evidence to infer, or figure something out. You also use evidence to predict what will happen next. Common and Proper Nouns – A common noun names a person, place, or thing. A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing. Proper nouns begin with capital letters. Spelling Long o Spellings: load soak glow almost tomorrow open shadow sold throat sailboats told foam window cold ocean yellow follow coach most coast Lesson Vocabulary: crew – a group of people doing work (A crew, or group of workers, has just started to build a new bridge.) tide – the rise and fall of the sea (When the sea falls at low tide, it’s a good time to make repairs.) cling – to hold tightly to something (Painters cling to the bridge when the wind blows. They hold on tightly!) balancing – keeping steady (Workers must be good at balancing on high, thin beams without falling.) foggy – filled with thick mist or low clouds (On foggy days, thick mist makes it hard to see. Drivers must go slowly.) disappears – passes from sight (Half of the bridge disappears in this photo. It seems to vanish in the fog.) stretch – to spread out (Bridges may stretch over land or run across large bodies of water.) excitement - the feeling of being stirred up (Marathon runners feel excitement as they cross this bridge. It is a thrill!)
