1 Poetic Elements Cornell Notes
Example questions will be on the left side for you to add to the notes. You will use these notes for the rest of the 6 weeks.

4 What literary devices are used in poetry?
Alliteration-uses the same beginning word sounds over and over, like a tongue twister. Example: Sally sells seashells by the seashore. The setting sun slipped slowly down. Write your own example of alliteration using the pictures below:

5 Onomatopoeia-use of words that imitate sounds.
Example: Wham! Pow! Splat! Bark! Write a sentence using onomatopoeia with the pictures below:

6 Personification-when human qualities are given to nonliving objects.
Example: The wind whistled. The sun played peekaboo with the clouds. Write your own example of personification using the pictures below:

7 Symbols-using an object or word to represent an abstract idea
Symbols-using an object or word to represent an abstract idea. An action, person, place, word, or object can all be symbols. Example: Black is used to represent death or evil. A chain represents two objects being joined together. Write a sentence describing the symbol below:

8 Imagery-refers to the “mental pictures” that readers experience when reading. Appeals to one or more of the five senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) Example: It was dark and dim in the forest. (sight) The children were screaming and shouting in the field. (sound) Write a sentence with imagery using the pictures below:

9 Tone-an attitude toward a subject or audience by the author conveyed through a choice of words.
Example: I want to ask the authorities, “What is the big deal?” (sarcastic) I want to draw attention to the appropriate authorities. (serious) Write a sentence and label the tone:

10 Theme-moral, life lesson or message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work what the story teaches about life (can be stated directly or indirectly). Example: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. With great power comes great responsibility. Write a sentence as an example of theme:

11 Stanza-a group of set lines in a poem.
What are the structure elements of poem? Stanza-a group of set lines in a poem. Example: Using the example you already wrote down, label each stanza.

12 Rhyme Scheme-A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhymes at the end of each line of a poem or song. It is usually referred to by using letters to indicate which lines rhyme; lines designated with the same letter all rhyme with each other. Example: Label the poem on the following slide with the appropriate rhyme scheme.

14 Internal Rhyme- two or more rhyming words occurring within the same line often in the middle of the line. Example: I went to town to buy a gown. I took the car and it wasn’t far. Write a sentence using internal rhyme utilizing the pictures below:

15 Interacting with the Notes
Circle the key terms (12 of them) Underline or highlight the key phrase for each of those key terms (simile= comparison using like or as) Using what you already know from 6th and 7th grade, add one piece of information to each term(example, definition, idea). Answer the questions on the left in a 5-7 sentence paragraph summary. DUE tomorrow when I return.
