National Myths A story concerning the early history of people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. Some people turn to myths as a force that unifies and promotes national identity. Example: Beavers will bite of their own testicles when confronted by a predator. This myth has an old pedigree, going back to ancient times, with commentators such as Pliny and Claudius describing how the beaver, confronted by hunters, would sacrifice its testicles, which were prized for their medicinal value, in the same way a man who is mugged might immediately present to the robber the contents of his wallet.

He also created a national myth. Professional Athlete Wayne Gretzky urged the Canadian Government to stop the trade of him going to Los Angeles, he was too much of a Canadian icon. Riis called Gretzky “the Canadian national symbol, like the beaver”.
