2 Mechanical Weathering
Ice Wedging Mechanical Weathering At Bryce Canyon water in the form of ice is the most efficient form of erosion for breaking rock into smaller pieces. The area receives approximately 100 inches of snowfall a year. It also experiences about 200 days of freeze/ thaw. Which means that everyday a small amount of snow melts and runs into the joints and freezes at night. When water freezes it expands to form an ice wedge in the joint widening the space. As the ice wedge grows by more water leaking into the joint and freezing it will finally break the rock.

Arizona Rock Formation Photograph by Melissa Farlow Winds sweeping through the Grand Canyon have eroded this sandstone outcrop into an anvil shape. Wind shapes these fantastical forms by eroding less dense rock, like sandstone, faster than surrounding rock. Wind Abrasion Mechanical Weathering - The wind blows sediments against a rock it breaks it down.

4 Water Abrasion Zion National Park, UT
Mechanical Weathering – The water bumps against the rocks and picks up sediment taking them with it.

5 Gravity Abrasion Mechanical Weathering – Many rocks tumble down a hill together, bumping and grinding.

6 Mechanical Weathering –
Plant Roots Mechanical Weathering –

7 Mechanical Weathering – Animals burrow in the ground and form a hole.

8 Effects of Acid Rain Chemical Weathering

9 Chemical Weathering when iron and oxygen mix
Sedona, AZ Oxidation/Rusting Chemical Weathering when iron and oxygen mix The deep red color for which Sedona is famous is due to the presence of hematite (iron oxide, otherwise known as rust) that stains the sandstone.

10 Acid in Living Things (Lichens)
Chemical Weathering the Lichens release a week acid in the air.
