1 Excretory System The excretory system is a system that removes excess, unnecessary materials from the body fluids of an organism, so as to help maintain internal chemical homeostasis and prevent damage to the body.

2 Standards [SC.6.L.14.5] Human Body Systems
Identify and investigate the general functions of the major systems of the human body Prior Knowledge—[SC.6.L.14.1 and SC.5.L.14.2]

3 Objectives Students will identify and describe the general functions of the digestive and excretory systems. Students will identify and describe how the major systems of the human body interact to maintain homeostasis.

4 Excretory system vocabulary
Excretory system--The excretory system is a system that removes excess, unnecessary materials from the body fluids of an organism, so as to help maintain internal chemical homeostasis and prevent damage to the body Intestines--the lower part of the alimentary canal from the end of the stomach to the anus Liver--glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates, involved in many metabolic processes Nutrient--substance that provides nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life Pancreas--gland behind the stomach that secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum. Stomach--major part of the digestion of food occurs, being a pear-shaped enlargement of the alimentary canal linking the esophagus to the small intestine.

5 Essential question How do the digestive and excretory systems work together to maintain homeostasis?? The digestive system breaks down the nutrients to a level that the cells can use. This process also produces waste, which the excretory system removes from the body.

6 The Excretory system helps the Digestive system by getting rid of waste. The Digestive system helps the Excretory system by breaking down food to be eliminated from the body.   Without the excretory system things would not be able to be flushed out.   Did you know—Each day,  the kidneys process and filter gallons of blood through more than two million nephrons. The filtering ability of the nephrons enables around 99 percent of blood to be recycled by the body.

8 How much have you learned about the excretory system????
What is the most important organ in the excretory system? Kidney Liver Bladder What are the microscopic filters within the kidneys called? Neurons ureter Nephrons Urine contains mainly water and… Ammonia Urea mountain dew

9 Digestive system group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. Food passes through a long tube inside the body known as the alimentary canal or the gastrointestinal tract

11 objectives Students will identify and describe the general functions of the digestive and excretory systems. Students will identify and describe how the major systems of the human body interact to maintain homeostasis.

12 Digestive vocabulary Mechanical digestion- breaking, crushing, mashing food. Chemical digestions- large molecules of food are broken sown into smaller ones + go into the bloodstreams. Mouth- chews food with saliva, which helps start chemical digestion of food. Esophagus- a long tub that moves food from the throat to the stomach. STOMACH – a MUSCULAR BAG THAT CRUSHES FOOD AND CONTAINS ACIDS AND ENZYMES FOR BREAKING DOWN PROTEINS AND KILLING BACTERIA. Small intestine – where most chemical digestion happens and the most nutrients are absorbed. Pancreas – makes fluids that breakdown proteins, carbohydrates, fats and nucleic acid. Liver – makes and releases a mixture called bile, that is then stored in the gall bladder. Large intestine – removes water from mostly digested food, absorbs vitamins and turns food into mostly solid waste, called feces (poop).

13 Essential Question How do the digestive and excretory systems work together to maintain homeostasis?? The digestive system breaks down the nutrients to a level that the cells can use. This process also produces waste, which the excretory system removes from the body.

14 The system is also know as the gastrointestinal track or system.
The digestive system is the group of organs that changes food into a form that can be used by the bodies cells.   The system is also know as the gastrointestinal track or system.   The digestive process can be divided into four places. Ingestion – food is devoured Digestion – done by all the organs of the digestive track Absorption – the small intestine Elimination – the large intestine, colon, and rectum Did you know—The stomach produces a thick mucus to protect it from its own acids. The stomachs acid is strong enough to dissolve a nail.

16 How much have you learned about the Digestive system????
What is the tube connection your mouth to your stomach? Trachea esophagus Small intestine True or False: One purpose of the stomach is to store food? True or False: Your body absorbs many nutrients from the small intestine. The function of the digestive system is to Break down and absorb nutrients Support soft tissue and protect organs control activities through electrical impulses
