4. Troops Sent to the Border
As a result of border dispute troops are sent into the disputed area
Fighting (war) is becoming very likely
US offers to buy CA and NM for 30 mil
Mexico says no
After a few months there is finally a skirmish with Mexican troops
This is what Polk had been waiting for

5. US Declares War May 13, 1846 Polk convinces congress to declare war
“American blood spread on American soil”
Finally after much back and forth the seige of Mexico City happens
General Winfield Scott captured Mexico City

6. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Recognized Rio Grande as the new border
New Mexico and California were ceded to the US
2/5 of Mexican territory
US paid 15 mil to Mexico
