2. User Controls Ranking
Rooms inside buildings will experience heat gains from many sources, which
results in the temperature and humidity in the space increasing to a level that
may well be uncomfortable for the occupants. In order to maintain comfort
conditions these heat gains must be removed and refrigeration plant is
installed to achieve this.
Heat gains into a space arise from:
— solar radiation
— heat conduction through the building structure into the space
— sensible heat from internal sources such as computers, lighting, people
— latent heat gains generated from sources within the space, such as
people
— ventilation and infiltration of warm outside air.
In most air conditioning applications, the heat gains vary throughout each 24-
hour period and during the year, so the total heat gain for any space can vary
from zero to 100%. The refrigeration system has to meet the peak demand
and must also be capable of operating at part load for most of its life. In many
buildings internal heat gains exceed winter heat losses such that cooling is
required throughout the year.
