Questions? Why? Who? How? What? Objectives:
By the end of the session the students will be able to say: Why equality and diversity is important in colleges and universities Who our college community are How we gather information on staff and students and how we plan to use it What the benefits are of having a diverse college community What students can expect from the college around equality and diversity (their rights) What is expected from students (their responsibilities)
3
What is equality? Equality is ………………
ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and equally, specific to their needs. Equality is not …………. about simply treating people the same. Notes: A common mistake is for people to think that ‘equality’ means treating everyone the same. Promoting equality should remove discrimination. Bullying, harassment or victimisation are also considered as equality and diversity issues.

What is equality? Which picture shows equality? The one on the right.
Treating people the same is not equality. We may have to treat people differently according to their needs to ensure equality. (Source: FRESh)
5
What is diversity? Diversity aims to recognise, respect and value people’s differences. Notes: Promoting an inclusive culture will encourage everyone, regardless of their background, to contribute and realise their full potential.
6
Why equality and diversity?
Under the Equality Act 2010 colleges and universities are required to give ‘due regard’ to the need to: eliminate unlawful discrimination advance equality of opportunity promote good relations for those who have a protected background Why do we need to be recognising peoples differences? In 2010, the Equality Act came into force bringing together various pieces of equality legislation, its intention, to harmonise discrimination law and strengthen the law to support progress on equality. ‘ Due regard’ - To 'have due regard' means that in making decisions and in its other day-to-day activities a body subject to the duty (eg college/university) must consciously consider the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
7
What are protected backgrounds?
Age Disability Gender Reassignment Marriage and civil partnership (in employment) Pregnancy and Maternity Race Religion or Belief (including no belief) Sex Sexual Orientation There are 9 protected backgrounds which are also known as ‘protected characteristics’. Only 8 of them relate directly to students – marriage and civil partnership only applies to staff as it is in relation to employment It is unlawful to discriminate against people because of their protected characteristic(s) eg you cannot be asked to leave your course just because you are/become pregnant

We gather this information: So that we can make things better for everyone so that we can better meet the needs of our college community we can report to the government on the information gathered People can of course choose not to give us this information if they prefer.

What are the benefits of being in a diverse college community?
you get to meet and work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures you can develop an important employability skill ……… ‘working with others’ (Source: vitae) Notes: Employers want their staff to be able to get on together and work alongside each other, recognising and respecting difference. Customers also come from a wide variety of backgrounds so you need also to be able to recognise and respect this. Coming to college gives you a fantastic opportunity to meet and work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

To treat all other students and members of the College staff with respect and courtesy. Throughout the session there will be a variety of equality and diversity events held across the college – mainly in the Union and in conjunction with the Students’ Association to help further raise your understanding of equality and diversity. Students are encouraged to attend. Students are also encouraged to work with people from different backgrounds, within the classroom ie young with mature students, males with females etc. Tell students that they may find this difficult in the first instance but it will become easier as the year goes on. It’s all part of the learner journey …………………………………
