4-H Record Keeping Starting out Right Creek County 4-H

2 Parent/Volunteer Roles
Help members set reasonable goals Provide solid learning opportunities Encourage them to record accomplishments as they occur Provide tools for keeping records Make record keeping or journaling part of every 4-H meeting Set aside time to assist with putting record books together

3 What is a “Project”? A subject/topic a member learns about in 4-H
Something a member can do or make Activities that helps members learn new things and develop new skills

4 Why Keep 4-H Records? Learn to: Gather information needed to
Use project objectives Set goals Plan project work Keep records Organize information Gather information needed to apply for awards Meet requirements for some activities

5 Why use project objectives?
Provide standards/guides for project work Allow members to have similar project opportunities/experiences Give a place to “start” Insure that members learn/do a variety of things as they complete project work Provide direction for judging committees

6 Where to find Objectives

7 Let’s take a closer look at each section of the Creek County Record book.

8 Assembly Typed or in the member’s handwriting
Add each year’s new information at the top Move the previous year’s information down Remove previous year’s pictures and story Include information from July 1st of previous year through June 30th of the current year Assemble in a green folder with brads or in an Official Record Book Cover Available through the 4-H mall or at the Extension Office

9 Checklists Use the list of Medals Available to determine which awards to apply for. Can apply for TWO medals each year Can win the same medals each year Complete the Awards I’m Applying For Additional information on all awards are in the Creek County Handbook These pages should NOT be attached Lay them just inside the front cover or in the front pocket.

12 Cover Page Use a head and shoulder photo of member
Can be black and white or color Include all awards received Hallmarks, award trips, project medals, etc Put a blank divider page after the cover page

13 The County Record Book

14 Story The story shows growth in project work Show your personality
Outstanding accomplishments, funny stories, catastrophes Show your personality PROOFREAD! Start with “My 4-H Story” as the heading Use an introduction, body, and conclusion Should be at least ½ a page No more than 2 pages

15 Participation Section
More than 1 page of each section can be included List this year’s information first Level: local (club), county, district, state, national, international Include ALL information, don’t leave anything out If something doesn’t fit, put it in the “other” section A blank divider page should be placed before and after this section

19 Tours/Field Trips Attended

20 Judging Events/Workouts Attended

21 Leadership/Promotional Leadership

29 Project Sheets Developed for each “stand alone” project
Can include more than 2 project sections Pick which two are up for awards For projects with only a few activities Group them together as “Other Projects” Can use/adapt project objectives provided Picture Section One page per project Up to six pictures with captions per page

34 Picture Section Can include two pages of miscellaneous pictures, or newspaper clippings Must be related to your 4-H work Not a scrapbook!
