3 Jesus’ friends, followers & foes
Jesus 12 closest friends = apostles (studied last lesson) were the core group who knew him best & told people about him after he went up to heaven. Very reliable eyewitnesses because of what they gave up to follow him & how well they knew him. Simon Peter from last week was an apostle. 12 Apostles Left everything to follow Jesus 3 years travelling & living together Spread the news about Jesus

4 Disciples Luke 7:11 Luke 6:19 Luke 9:11 Luke 8:4
One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Galilee, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.  He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. Get ss to find & read out Bible passages about Jesus being followed by crowds – his teaching/healing etc Read Luke 5:1-3 story with class Re-inforce: anyone who follows Jesus is a disciple 12 apostles, many disciples

5 Enemies Luke 20:20 Pharisees & teachers of the law Luke 20:45-47
While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,  “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely. Ask a student to read out Luke 20:20 Then read story Luke 20:45 etc together with class – explain that as time went on Jesus became more popular with people & less & less popular with religious leaders.

6 Remember? Eyewitnesses
Ask Ss to tell you the terms for groups of people: Apostles, disciples, Pharisees All valuable eyewitnesses, Luke could have interviewed them to compile his biography of Jesus. Eyewitnesses

7 Jesus met A Paralysed man

8 Read Luke 5:27-32 Look up the definitions Read Luke Answer questions

9 Extension The Sabbath (Saturday) is the jewish day of rest. The Ten commandments told Jews to rest on the Sabbath. Why? Find the answer in Exodus 20:8-11 Read Luke 6:6-11. Jesus did ‘work’ on the Sabbath by healing someone. Think & answer: Was Jesus more interested in keeping rules or healing/forgiving people? Is he guilty of breaking God’s command? Why/why not? How did the Pharisees respond to what Jesus did? Why?
