3 The Importance of Vision
90% of driving decisions are based on information received from our eyes. Drivers must see far enough ahead to make good decisions and close enough to read the speedometer. Center St image from: Speedometer image from: Retrieved: 08/03/10

4 Visual acuity is the ability to see things clearly.
You must be able to clearly and quickly identify closing zones in your intended path of travel. Your brain directs the eyes to focus on objects in and around your path of travel. Night image from: Reno image from: Retrieved: 08/03/10

5 Drive Right chapter 6 Wednesday, November 28, 2018 I.P.D.E. Visual information sent to the brain is combined with stored information. As a result, you can: Identify hazards Predict conflicts Decide to maintain or adjust your speed and position Execute your decisions Image from: Retrieved: 08/04/10 Version 2

7 Field of Vision Field of vision is the entire area that you can see while looking straight ahead. Central Vision targeting Fringe Vision depth and position Peripheral Vision color and motion

8 3 Visual Fields Central Vision Central Vision
Peripheral Vision Fringe Vision Central Vision Central Vision Visual Acuity, Targeting, Signs, Signals Fringe Referencing, Path of Travel Peripheral Vision Motion and Color Changes

9 Straight-ahead vision
Central Vision Straight-ahead vision Used for: Targeting skills Establishing visual lead Reading signs and interpreting signals Image from: Retrieved: 08/03/10

10 Approximately 90 to each side
Peripheral Vision Approximately 90 to each side Used to see: Moving objects Color changes Motorcycle image from: Retrieved: 08/03/10

11 Part of your peripheral vision closest to central vision
Fringe Vision Part of your peripheral vision closest to central vision Used for: Judging depth and position Seeing reference points Keeping on the travel path and within lane position Image from: Retrieved: 08/03/10

Depth Perception Depth perception is the ability to judge distance between yourself and other objects. It takes both eyes to judge distance between two objects. Used when: approaching a vehicle or obstruction turning or merging passing Image from: Retrieved: 08/3/10

14 Poor Depth Perception Compensate for poor depth perception by:
Using a larger following distance Allowing for additional clearance distance before passing Keeping a greater distance at night than during day Image from: Retrieved: 08/03/10

15 Drivers have less time to see and make decisions.
Speed and Vision At higher speeds, your field of vision is narrowed. Drivers have less time to see and make decisions. “tunnel” image from: Truck image from: Retrieved: 08/03/10

16 Speed Smear As speed increases: central vision decreases and blurs
