2 Keeping Yourself Pure What can a leader do to keep him or herself pure? Leaders must examine their own hearts (Ps. 139:23-24; John 14:30).

3 As leaders we must know our own hearts
As leaders we must know our own hearts. We must be willing to be honest with ourselves and be willing to analyze the reasons why we are in the ministry and the things that truly motivate us. Some questions leaders can ask themselves to assist in this self-examination process include the following:

4 What are my heart attitudes?
What are my motivations? Is there anything in me that Satan can use for his ends? Why am I in the ministry?

5 Am I in leadership ministry…
To make a name for myself? To be great in man’s eyes? To have a following? To please or impress men? To be in the limelight? To have position and power over the lives of people?

6 Do I want to sit and be served or am I here to serve?
Am I in the ministry to fulfill certain needs in me? A need for acceptance? A need for attention? A need for a sense of self-worth, value or significance?

7 Am I in the ministry for personal financial gain?
Am I a hireling? Can I be bought? Do I treat rich people differently than poor people? Do I make merchandise of the people of God? Do I see people as a means to meet my personal desires and goals?

8 Am I in the ministry for what I can get out of it personally?
Paul spoke of those who preached from strife, envy and personal ambition (Phil. 1:15-16).

9 Paul spoke of those who served their own belly or their own interests (Rom. 16:18, NLT).
Paul spoke of those who served to please men (Gal. 1:10, NLT). Leaders must maintain and continually cultivate the heart of a servant.

10 All ministers are first and foremost servants!
Servants of God (II Cor. 3:6; I Th. 3:2). Servants of Christ (Rom. 1:1; I Cor. 4:1). Servants of the Gospel (Col. 1:23).

11 Servants of the New Covenant (II Cor. 3:6).
Servants of the people of God (I Cor. 3:5; 9:19). There are a number of things that will cause us to lose a servant’s heart. It is easy to lose a servant’s heart. It is easy…

12 When people murmur and complain when you have given yourself sacrificially to them.
When you begin to believe that you have paid you dues, you have sacrificed enough and now you owe it to yourself. When you are hurt by those who you are trying to help.

13 When you focus on the material success of others who are serving their own interests…and seem to be getting away with it. When you start listening to the humanistic lie that the best thing you can do for others is to do what is good for you. Leaders must exalt the word in every aspect of their life and ministry.

14 This means… Loving it! Preaching it! Teaching it! Meditating on it! Searching it! Practicing it! Being a lover of truth!

15 Leaders must never get tired of the basics of Christianity.
We must trust the basics. This includes focusing on… The ABC’s of Christianity. Basic Doctrine (Repentance, Faith, God, Man, Sin, Redemption, Etc.) Building strong marriages and families.

16 Practicing basic New Testament Christianity (Acts 2:42-47).
Leaders must maintain a first love relationship with the Lord (Rev. 2:4-5; John 7:16-17).

17 What can a leader do to protect those under his or her care?
Be willing to test ministries. This means that… We cannot be intimidated by the signs and wonders that we see. We must be a little skeptical of the new and exotic (Pro. 15:1

18 We must be a fruit inspector (Mt. 7:16).
We must carefully screen ministries from within and from without. Be willing to test doctrine. Be willing to judge prophecy (See Appendix 1).
