2. “Stray”
It is in the middle of January during a major snowstorm
Doris, who’s younger, sees an abandoned, freezing puppy while she’s shoveling snow and takes it inside to stay in the basement
Though her father, Mr. Lacey, states that he’s going to take it to the pound (we find out later it is because he’s struggling to make enough to support his family) Doris tries to convince him to keep the puppy.
When the weather gets better, Mr. Lacey gathers up the puppy and, while Doris is crying to her mother who tells her to act more grown up, puts it in the car.
The next morning Doris mopes down to breakfast when Mr. Lacey tells her she needs to feed her puppy because he was disgusted with the pound and brought the puppy back to stay with them.
