5. Explanation of ICI Strategy
We will use this strategy to compare and contrast two poems. Later in the week, we will use it again to connect the poems with events and ideas in TKAM.
ICI stands for interest, connect, and investigate. Here’s what that means:
Interest: What did you find interesting about what you just read? Was it the topic, the way the author presented it, a particular passage or phrasing? Why were those things interesting to you?
Connect: What can you relate the subject/events/characters to? Can you connect it with something personal? Something that you learned in school? Something happening in the world?
Investigate: What would you like to know more about? Don’t let this one scare you. Do you have questions about vocabulary? Would you like to know more about something mentioned in the text? Would you like to know more about a literary device used? Would you like to find other texts like this one?

6. TKAM Poetry Connection Using the ICI Strategy
First, view this recitation of Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Sympathy.
Now, reread the poem on your own and note areas of interest, connection, or curiosity requiring further investigation.
Identify juxtaposition being used in this poem and explain its effect on the reader.
Identify the reader’s mood and the speaker’s tone, providing evidence from the poem to support your conclusions.
Next, view this recitation of Maya Angelou’s Caged Bird.
Repeat steps 2-5 for Caged Bird.
Finally, compare and contrast the two poems. In what ways are they similar and in what ways are they different.
