Lucy's bones survived eons without protection
Lucy's bones survived eons without protection. Donald Johanson, director of Arizona State University's Institute of Human Origins in Tempe, discovered them in the fossil-rich region of Hadar, in northeastern Ethiopia, lying in the open.

``When I looked up the slope to my left, I saw some ribs, I saw some pelvis,'' he said. The geology indicated that the bones were 3 million years old, making them the most complete set of human ancestor fossils ever found from that period. Lucy consists of several hundred bones and fragments, including a partial pelvis, rib cage, arms and jaw. `Common Ancestor' ``She occupied a very important position on the family tree as the last common ancestor for those humans who evolved into homo sapiens,'' Johanson said.

Here’s what our archeologists found
She had wisdom teeth, and they were worn. The shape and the size of the bones let them know she could walk upright. She had a small brain (must be a small skull) She was only a meter high…how high? One meter = 3 feet

MEET ARDI
9
Stats She was about 4 feet tall Female Close cousin
4.4 million years old Ethiopia 17 years to excavate Sandwiched between two layers of volcanic rock (included habitat) Holds the honor of oldest hominid skeleton

13
This is how they found him
14
Iceman stats Nickname Otzi because he was found in the Otztaler Alps
Well preserved some internal organs survived. About 45 years old 1.6 meters high Died around 3,190 BC or BCE Found things like arrows with flintstone and a copper hatchet Found in 1991 he is kept frozen and often researched
15
Okay last gross picture

Brainstorm What can modern man learn from studying these ancient remains? Come up with 5 different reasons… What would you hope that people 5000 years from now would learn about you?
