1 Future: Working in Real-Time
by Dr. Knut I. Oxnevad Founder and CEO SIMTANO™ as one of the COFES 2008 5 min Vignettes Scottsdale AZ, April 11, 2008 Slide 1: 15 sec Working i real-time; could this be the driver for the next big thing in engineering software

2 Systems: Larger and More Complex
(1) (3) (2) Slide 2: 1 min Cars: Wil have to be smaller, more fuel efficient, be smarter and be recyleable Sustainable Powersources: Will have to be distrubuted over large areas, one per house, smaller and be more efficient (fuel cells, solar cells) Deep water Subsea systems: Will have to inlcude more autonomy, shift from hydrualuic to electrical actuators, operate in deeper waters, and may include processing system Planetary bases: Will include humans, and require sophisticated life support systems, habitats, and larger vehicles Common for all these: Systems are getting larger and more complex Images: NASA (1), Chrysler, Nassau Concept, Marc Rozman, allpar.com (2); (3) November 28, p. 2

3 Work: More Specialised and More Interdisciplinary
- CONFLICT - Slide 3: 1 min Developing these type of large and complex systems require that each expert face an increasing demand for specialisation within their field, yet at the same time, the complexity of future systems also require that they interact more with the other expert This creates a conflict for each for the disciplines involved in these projects. November 28, p. 3

4 Meetings, Meetings, and even more Meetings....????
Solution A: Meetings, Meetings, and even more Meetings....???? Slide 4: 15 sec The way we have solved this conflict so far is by having the experts do their work in their offices and then come together and discuss and give status in meetings. We all know them: coordination meetings, status meetings, progress meetings, etc. In fact we often set up so many meetings that we basically drown our experts in meetings and they do little else but running to and from meetings. Sounds familiar??!! Is there a better way? November 28, p. 4

5 Solution B: Working in Real-Time
Slide 5: 1 min 30 sec Yes, that is by working in real-time. Instead of having meetings where the experts come together and talk, we invite them to design and solve problems in real-time in short and focused sessions conducted in specially designed work arenas. This is made possible by providing all experts with net worked computers, the necessary real-time analysis and design tools. Any computer may at any time be switched to any wall mounted screen. The latter making it possible for all experts to create a common understanding of the the same design solving problem and the same be able to view a problem from many angels. The sessions are led by a facilitator and includes a decision maker. These ideas were pioneered at JPL, later ESA, and other NASA centers, I have now taken this into the oil and gas industry. 6 My challenge to You Process People Tools PPT-Model Real-Time
Concurrency Analysis, Design, Sim. PPT-Model Tools My challenge to You Slide 6: 1 min To make this work, we need to understand the people, process, and tools parts, and how they impact each other. Tools are therefore an essential part of making this work. Challenge to you is to develop tools that we can use for doing analysis, design, and simulations in real-time ©SIMTANO™ November 28, p. 6
