What is the Internet The Internet is a collection of computer networks that have agreed to interact with one another. This is accomplished with the use of a standard communication protocol, TCP/IP

The Internet started in 1969 as a development of the ARPANET project The TCP/IP protocol was agreed upon in 1983

The World Wide Web Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 as a method to easily find and retrieve information on the Internet The main components of the WWW are browsers and servers One uses a browser to request a web page from a web server The web server that is contacted will, if it can, find the requested page and send it to the browser requesting it

Search Engines A search engine is a program that searches for information on the World Wide Web and returns links to web pages holding the requested information. Search engines use a program to follow the links that make up the WWW and index them in a large database. The database is then searched when a request is given. Google is currently the largest and most used search engine
