1 Newton’s 1st and 2nd Laws of Motion
Chapter 2, Section 3 Page 51 – 54

2 The 1st Law of Motion An object at __REST__ will remain at rest, and an object moving at a __CONSTANT__ velocity will continue moving at a constant velocity, unless it is acted upon by an __UNBALANCED FORCE__. Non-moving objects will __ NOT__ moving. A moving object will __KEEP__ moving __GRAVITY and FRICTION__ are 2 forces that change an object’s motion. In your own terms: ___AN OBJECT AT REST WILL STAY AT REST, AND AN OBJECT IN MOTION WILL STAY IN MOTION, UNLESS AN OUTSIDE FORCE ACTS ON IT__. Newton’s 1st Law of Motion (1:32)

3 Inertia __INERTIA__ is the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion. Newton’s __1st LAW__ is also known as the Law of Inertia. Inertia Depends on Mass The GREATER the mass = The __GREATER__ the inertia. The LESS the mass = the __LESS__ the inertia.

4 The 2nd Law of Motion Acceleration depends on the object’s __MASS and NET FORCE__ acting on the object. Acceleration = __NET FORCE__ / __MASS__ Acceleration is measured in __METERS PER SECOND PER SECOND (M/S2)__ Mass is measured in __KILOGRAMS__ Force is measured in __KILOGRAMS (Kg) X M/S2 __ or __NEWTONS__ 2nd Law of Motion (3:08)

5 Changes in Force and Mass
Two ways to increase the acceleration of an object: __FORCE__ and __MASS__ For a constant mass: __MORE__ force = __MORE__ acceleration __LESS__ mass =
