2 Why bother with developing and using strategies?
Prepares the students physically and psychologically Builds confidence General Entrance Exams Эсэлтийн Ерөнхий Шалгаалт Vitally important to practice often in exam conditions: Time limitations Physical stamina Mental stamina Psychological preparation Remember: University Entrance Exam preparation is a three year process which begins in the 10th grade. During 10th and 11th grade elective lessons we should focus on grammar review, vocab building, reading comprehension skills etc. In the third year 12th graders should be mastering previous exam materials , new exam materials and EXAM STRATEGIES.

3 strategy = a way to do things = a plan A good strategy is………..
Efficient -> done in time Effective -> with good results

4 General Strategies Specific Strategies
Two main types of exam strategies to consider: General Strategies Specific Strategies Both of these are equally important Some important things to consider: Every one is different [preferences, skills, interests and confidence] There is no one right / correct strategy The most important thing is to have a strategy. Directed discussion with students: their responsibility to consider different strategies, try them and choose what works best for them

5 EFFICIENT OR EFFECTIVE
General Strategies Mark answers on work sheet first and then move them to the answer sheet or mark answers directly onto answer sheet ? EFFICIENT OR EFFECTIVE If transferring answers, exercise by exercise or after the entire test is completed? What order to do the exercises in?? First to last? Most difficult first? Easiest first? Always provide time at the end for checking!

6 General Strategies Psychological preparation Visualization techniques
What to think about while standing in line outside the school? What to think about in the exam room just before the test? BUT also need to pay attention to instructions before the exam! Has their preparation made this experience seem common and calming?????

7 Specific Strategies Grammar questions:
Which grammar? Verb tense, articles, reported speech etc. Make a list of grammar and decide which items you don’t understand well and need to review. (students and teachers) When discussing answers: ask ‘Why not? as well as ‘Why?’ At last, after he had come so far, he realized that he couldn’t ______ another step further. A) went B) go C) gone D) going E) goes Use short memory cues for grammar rules e.g. After modals base form Vocabulary questions: Learning, using and memorizing words in associative groups / themes / text/ word formation Regular quizzes and random questioning

8 Error Recognition Diagraming sentences / Dividing the sentence into its grammatical parts Reading the sentence stopping at underlined answers He couldn’t hardly remember the accident because he was only a five year old boy when he occurred. A B C D E The CEO of the company was shocked that its stock could have lost such a large amount of valuable in A B C D such a short amount of time. E Remind students that the error could be grammatical or vocabulary!

9 Communicative Matching Exercises
SHORT LONG I’ve been fine and you? It might be easy for you! Did you really say that? I really appreciated that. No trouble at all, I was glad to have a chance to help. You should have seen her face when I told her to leave! I think that these kinds of tests can be done quickly. I haven’t seen you in a long time , are you ok? From Long to Short: Choose one long sentence and match with the short side statements. Read from the top of the long list and start with one you understand well. Do lots of these kinds of exercises, experience is the key. Have students make there own excercises in groups and then pass on to each other.

10 Reading Exercises This reading exercise was taken from the October 2017 Mock Uni. test that came from the Education Evaluation Center

SECTION : 4 READING Read the passage. Then answer the questions below. /8 x 2 = 16 points/ The magician let go of James, but instead of falling through the air, he began to spin slowly, then quickly, as if he were being controlled by some supernatural force. Everything was black, but he didn’t remember closing his eyes. Suddenly there were horns blowing and people cheering. He was sitting in the middle of the road, and an army of men riding horses were coming towards him, so he quickly got out of the way. As he was brushing the dust off his clothes, he saw that all the people around him were wearing strange robes, with sandals on their feet. He looked around at the buildings and realized he was in Ancient Egypt. The army passed, and Antony and Cleopatra, riding in chariots, were led up the steps of the palace. When the professor heard Antony call Cleopatra the “Queen of Kings”, he knew the year must be 34 BC. A crowd of people had gathered around James. They started touching the brown suit he was wearing, pointing at his shoes and looking at him in wonder. One man asked him if he was a Roman. When he said no, the man asked him what he thought of Antony and Cleopatra’s friendship. “Well, I happen to know that their relationship will end in disaster. Octavian will attack, Egypt will be defeated, and Antony and Cleopatra will commit suicide.” “Traitor! Traitor!” The man shouted. They rushed him off to the royal palace to explain before the Roman general and the queen why he had spoken out against them. Cleopatra was sitting on her throne wearing a long golden dress, while Antony was sitting by her. James couldn’t believe he was standing before Cleopatra. The man was explaining what the professor had said, and Antony was listening patiently. “And why do you think such a disaster will come to Egypt?” Antony asked. He tried to explain that he had travelled back in time from the future so he knew what would happen, but that only worked against him. Antony was not sure and asked Cleopatra what they should do. “Feed him to the crocodiles,” she said casually. And so it was done. Two guards held the professor by his arms. He begged them to spare his life, but as soon as Antony gave the signal, James was thrown into the water.
