1 Grab a PLICKERS card from the front table…
Get ready to test your mastery? HAVE YOU BEEN STUDYING?

2 What are we learning? Last class: This class: Substitute Plan
Page 26: Summary of “How much Salt is in our Food” Page 27: Guided Notes Cardiovascular System Page 28: SRE or Enrichment Page 29: Self Guided QUIZ This class: PLICKERS review! Review Guided Notes on Page 27 What is the take away Review Quiz 3 What was your grade? SRE or Enrichment Cardiovascular Lab

3 Housekeeping Check your notebooks www.edwhitebiology.weebly.com
Do you have work on Pages 20-27? There were a lot of people missing for testing- don’t fall behind GRADE PORTAL

4 Our Goal for the day The EOC is 8 class periods away. WE ARE SMART, WE ARE CAPABLE, AND WE CAN DO THIS! SWBAT describe the factors affecting blood flow through the cardiovascular system.

5 Cardiovascular System Notes
You took guided notes, which were prompted by questions. Let’s see how you did! Open up to Page 27

6 Major Organs Structures of the cardiovascular system include the heart, blood vessels, and blood.

7 Function The cardiovascular system is responsible for transporting nutrients and removing waste from the body. What kind of nutrients need to be transported? What kind of gaseous waste is made in the body?

8 The Heart and Blood Flow
Oxygen poor blood flows in from the body through a vein and is held in the right side of the heart ( It appears to be the left on diagrams, but think about it from the organism’s perspective). Why is the blood oxygen poor? What happened to the oxygen? Blood flows from the heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen. Oxygen rich blood enter the left side (looks like the right on diagrams), where large muscles pump it out the body through arteries.

9 GAS EXCHANGE IN THE BLOOD
Lungs GAS EXCHANGE IN THE BLOOD Picks up Oxygen Drops off Carbon Dioxide

10 Blood Vessels Arteries: Push Blood OUT from the heart
Veins: Take Blood BACK to the heart Capillaries: Transport In/Out of blood vessels

11 Blood Pressure The force with which blood pushes against the wall of an artery

12 What can impact blood pressure?
Poor diet Increased cholesterol= PLAQUE in the blood vessels INCREASES BLOOD PRESSURE DECREASES BLOOD FLOW Smoking Constricts blood vessels SLOWS BLOOD FLOW

13 BLOOD FLOW High viscosity = low flow(syrup) Low viscosity = fast flow
DO YOU WANT HIGHLY VISCOUS BLOOD?

14 What can impact blood pressure?
The immediate effect is HIGH PRESSURE. WHY? Exercise Strengthens blood vessels, increasing cardiovascular health overtime.

15 Cardiovascular LAB Page 30 and 31

16 Page 30: Blood Flow Lab copy the following into your INB
Page 30: Blood Flow Lab copy the following into your INB. LEAVE enough space to write! USE THE WHOLE PG Station 1 Resting Heart Rate Excited Heart Rate 2 Observation 1 Observation 2 3 Unobstructed Flow Rate Obstructed Flow Rate 4 Old Rubber Bands New Rubber Bands

17 Lab Expectations Academic Expectations:
When you are released you will work in groups of 4-5 to complete this lab. Follow my directions to transition to the lab area. Each station will run Academic Expectations: Read the directions carefully at each station! Respond in complete thoughts Behavior Expectations: Be PROFESSIONAL Be SAFE Be COLLABORATIVE

18 Page 31: Analysis Questions
In the lab you saw that exercise increases heart rate. Explain the effect do you think exercise has on blood pressure? Plaque can build up in your arteries causing disease. What effect does increased plaque has on blood pressure? Arteries and veins are elastic. What effect might a loss of elasticity might have on blood pressure? Increase in blood pressure is the immediate effect of exercise. Why is exercise considered to be an essential component to a healthy heart?

19 Closing Leave your notebook to be graded. Home Learning:
Check your grade portal! Scholarship warning will be written next week. AVOID YOURS BY MAKING UP ANY MISSING WORK! Make flashcards to reinforce the knowledge learned in class today. EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: Cardiovascular RAFT; see website for details

20 Extra Credit RAFT Role: Red blood cell Audience: Body Format: Letter
Topic: Heart health You, red blood cell, will be writing a letter to your body about maintaining heart health. Tell your body why the heart is important and discuss three factors that affect heart health.
