1.1 Adding Integers with the Same Sign
2
Vocabulary Integers: whole numbers and their opposites
Opposite: two numbers that are equal distance from zero on the number line
3
Method 1: Counters = 1 = -1 Example 2 + 3 = + = 5 yellow = 5
= 5 red so -5
4
Complete page 7 A, B and 1 A. 7 find the total of the positive counters B. 8 -8 1. The same sign as the addends
5
Method 2: Number Line Step 1: mark your first term on the number line
Step 2: Move the number of spaces in the appropriate direction positive move UP or to the RIGHT negative move DOWN or the LEFT Step 3: where you end is the sum Ex = Ex =
6
Complete page 8 A-D and 2-4 A. -2 degrees B. see diagram
C. see diagram D. -7 degrees 7 degrees BELOW 2. Start at -1. Move 3 units in a negative direction to -4. The new temperature is -4˚F 3. Instead of starting at 2 and moving 5 units in a positive direction to get 7 you would start at -2 move 5 units in a negative direction and get -7 4. Need a sum of -7
7
Method 3: Rules To add integers with the same sign, add the absolute values of the integers and use the sign of the integers for the sum Absolute value: the distance a number is from zero
8
Add -7 + (-6) Step 1: the absolute values |-7| + |-6| Step 2: Find the sum of the absolute values = 13 Step 3: use the sign of the integers to write the sum. -7 + (-6) = -13
9
Talk with your partner about page 9 # 5-6
For # 6 select two negative numbers and DO THE MATH- then answer the question
