1 Working Spatial Data File Geodatabase
March 30, 2016 RG620 File Geodatabase stores map layers, data tables and other GIS file types in a system folder (*.gdb).

2 File Geodatabase Collection of files in a file folder
Use ArcCatalog to maintain File Geodatabase

3 Tutorial 4-1:Build a File Geodatabase
Open ArcCatalog Create an empty file geodatabase MyExercise->Chapter4 Right click Chapter4 and click New, File Geodatabase Import shapefiles tgr04013ccd00 and tgr04013trt from GIST1\Data\MaricopaCounty Import a data table CensusDat.dbf Rename Features tgr04013ccd00 to Cities tgr04013trt to Tracts CensusDat to CensusTractData Create new map document Tutorial4-1.mxd and add above layers and table Collection of files in a file folder. Right click on file geodatabase and click import and then browse to the folder where data (feature class (multiple), Table (single), etc.) is saved.

4 ArcCatalog Utilities Preview layers
Click newly created File Geodatabase to look into its Contents, Preview, Description (Metadata) In right panel, click preview Geography, Table, Copy/delete layer Compress/uncompress file geodatabase

5 Tutorial 4-3: Modify Attribute Table
Delete unneeded columns from Tracts FIPSSTCO ID TRT2000 TractID Close table

6 Modify Primary Key and Add New Column
Tracts field STFID CensusTractData field GEO_ID Truncate GEO_ID to match STFID Add filed in CensusTractData named STFID Type = Text, Length = 11 Filed calculator: changed type from number to string Double click the Mid() function in STFID = Mid ([GEO_ID],8,11), ok

7 Calculate a New Column Add new field in CensusTarctData table
Name new field as RNatWht Change type to float Calculate ratio of Native American per capita income to White per capita income Right click RNatWht column heading and click ‘Field Calculator’ In Field Calculator window click PCINCNAT/PCINCWHT Select PCINCWHT > 0 records only b/c it’s divisor for this ratio and anything divided by zero is undefined. First select by attribute then calculate ratio.

8 Your Turn!! Calculate ratio of per capita income of Hispanics divided by the per capita income of whites

9 Join Tables Join attributes from table CensusTractData to the polygon Tracts Right Click Tracts layer Click Joins and Relate then click Join Join by field STFID View Joined attribute table of the shapefile

10 Tutorial 4-5: Create Centroid in a Table
Add X, Y coordinates to a polygon attribute table Tract Table: add 2 fields named ‘X’ and ‘Y’ Type = double Right click X and Y columns and Calculate Geometry for both columns Centroid of a polygon is the point at which the polygon would balance on a pencil point if it were cut out of cardboard.

11 Export Table In Table Option button click Export
Save as Type = File Geodatabase tables Save as TractCentriods in File Geodatabase When you export a joined table as a table, you get all the attributes of the joined table stored as one table permanently.

12 Create Feature Class from XY table
Through Catalog access to TractCentroids Right click TractCentriods , click Create Feature Class and click from XY Table Import Coordinate System as of Tracks Save as CensusTractCentroids Add CensusTractCentroids in ArcMap

13 Export a Subset of a Feature Class
