1 Development of a Two Port IV Catheter to Improve Patient Comfort
BioE Individual Presentation February 15, 2005 Development of a Two Port IV Catheter to Improve Patient Comfort Erik Frazier Kelly Baron, Riley Smith Advisors: Sandra Gartner, Vorp Laboratories

2 Clinical Significance
ULTIMATE GOAL: Reduce patient discomfort by limiting the number of needle pricks On average 90% of all hospital patients are in need of an IV of some type This will not be for use in the OR or ICU It will be for patients who need both a simple IV drip and require blood samples to be taken

3 New Design ≈ 1.5”

4 Design Changes Move from dual lumen back to single lumen  Why?
Easier insertion Need to stop IV drip to draw blood even with dual lumen Two external ports will allow for blood draw without “re-stick” IV drip port will stay connected to catheter; blood draw port will have end cap to prevent infection First 10mL of blood draw will be discarded to prevent contamination

5 Work Achieved Changed design to agree with suggestions from members of Dr. Vorp’s Lab Met with Andy at Swanson Center, developed plan for fabrication SolidWorks model approaching completion Starting to develop plans for testing So far, most tasks have been done as a group, and we plan to continue this
